Xavier Jazz Ensemble To Perform In China This Week

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Xavier University of Louisiana Jazz Ensemble travels to China this month to perform in the inaugural Dajidian International Music Festival.

         The festival, to be held in Baoding, Hebei Province, will feature more than 30 musicians from eight countries.

         Tim Turner, chair of Xavier's music department, will direct the ensemble which includes piano teacher James Charles, trumpeter Alijah Jett, guitarist Ajene Johnson, Ronald Davis on electric bass and drummer Wayne Matthews.

         The group traveled to China Saturday and will stay through Sep. 18.

         Besides the Dajidian Festival, the Xavier ensemble will also perform at Hebei University, where Turner will discuss possible teaching and research exchanges with his collegiate counterparts.

         The trip was facilitated by the Confucius Institute, and is funded by the Dajidian Festival.
