Work Gears Up On Morganza-To-The-Gulf Levee Project

HOUMA, LA (AP) — Work is moving ahead to complete the central part of a levee system to protect Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.

The Courier’s Meredith Burns reports bids for roughly $21 million of levee work are expected to go out this week for the Morganza-to-the-Gulf levee system.

Reggie Dupre, the Terrebonne Parish Levee District director, said the system now provides some levee protection from Pointe-aux-Chenes to the Houma Navigational Canal and the new work will fill in a gap to Bayou Dularge.

Until that portion of the system is complete, Hesco baskets will help protect the area from flooding, according to Mitch Marmande, the Morganza-to-the-Gulf program manager.

After this section, managers plan to raise parish levees and complete the Houma to Gibson portion of the Morganza project.
