NEW ORLEANS – Windsor Court has welcomed acclaimed sommelier Bill Burkhart to The Grill Room.

He brings vast experience, innovative technology and modernization to the restaurant’s wine list and cellar. The Grill Room already offers one of New Orleans’ most impressive wine selections and has received the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator and 100 Best Wine Restaurants recognition from Wine Enthusiast Magazine in 2013 and 2015.

After joining The Grill Room and Windsor Court Hotel family in June 2015, Burkhart hit the ground running and put his skills to use by spearheading a comprehensive redesign of the hotel’s nearly 7,000 bottle wine list and cellar. He is also working closely with The Grill Room’s Chef de Cuisine Daniel Causgrove on wine pairings for a multi-course tasting menu, a la carte menus and special events menus.

Burkhart has the prestigious Level II Court of Master Sommeliers Certification, with experience at top restaurants in California and New York, including the Capital Grille and Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse. He is enthusiastic about helping guests select from the extensive wine list to ensure they find the perfect pairing.

“I think it’s important to remember that this is supposed to be a celebration,” Burkhart said. “Wine is food, and food is fun. As a sommelier, I try to keep a light touch. Although I may have a little more knowledge and a little more expertise than the average guest, I use that to help make the selection process a little more fun.”

Under Burkhart’s guidance, The Grill Room is implementing the CoravinTM 1000 System, which allows the restaurant to access, pour and serve wine without removing the cork. One of the only restaurants in the city to provide the service, the Coravin gives The Grill Room the opportunity to offer a rotating list of rare and vintage wines by the glass while keeping them safe from oxidation. The current list of 15 rare wines available by the glass includes selections like a 2007 Bordeaux from Château Mouton-Rothschild and a 1983 Montelpuciano d' Abruzzo from Emidio Pepe.

“Bill’s expertise and enthusiasm has already enriched the experience of our clientele and staff,” said Joey Worley, food and beverage director at Windsor Court. “We are excited to see what he does next.”
