What is the Lasting Impact Biz Leaves Behind?

I’m very proud of the fact that over the past almost 12 years, Biz New Orleans Magazine has been a voice of hope in New Orleans. I have long repeated that the thinking with this magazine has always been that everyone in our city knows what the problems are — ask any New Orleanian and they will quickly rattle them off. Turn on the daily news or pick up the paper and you will read all about them.

Our problems are not news; what is news are the people doing something about them.

In every issue, our goal is to — just like Mr. Rogers once said — “find the helpers.” Through our website, our two daily newsletters, our weekly podcast “Biz Talks,” and this magazine you hold in your hands, we aim to introduce you to those helpers and share what they’re doing in our region and why.

I’m participating in Loyola’s Women’s Leadership Academy this year — run by my friend and constant source of joy and light, Amy Landry — and the first session talked a lot about purpose. The question we were to ask ourselves was “What is the lasting influence you want to leave behind through your actions, decisions and contributions?”

It’s a big question — maybe the biggest.

When it comes to me personally, I think I’m still trying to solidify my answer, but when it comes to what I do, what I want Biz to do, it’s pretty simple: I want to foster hope and connection. I want everyone who reads and listens to us to realize all the work that is being done every day by people on their street, in their neighborhood, in their hometown or adopted home to make sure this unbelievably unique — and straight out magical at times — part of the world that we inhabit not only survives but thrives.
