Westwego Abandons Plans To Replace Water Treatment Plant

WESTWEGO, LA (AP) — Westwego officials have abandoned a plan to replace the city's aged water treatment plant with compact "package" system.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Paul Purpura reports the City Council on Monday voted 4-1 in support of Mayor Johnny Shaddinger's want to invest about $3 million into Westwego's 80-year-old treatment plant.

The mayor and council reversed course on a plan to purchase a "package" water plant for about $3 million.

The councilmen cast their votes about an hour after they unanimously approved placing a 10-mill property tax rate increase on ballots during the May 2 municipal election. Some of that money would be dedicated to the water treatment plant.
