As I serve my term as President of the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans in 2018, I am humbled to know that I occupy a seat formerly held by the many past presidents that were so actively involved in advocating for the building industry. Throughout our 77 year history, the HBAGNO supported our membership by providing valuable resources and information, as well as networking opportunities to help them expand their businesses. I hereby challenge all of our members to get involved and support one of the following programs.
Advocacy
We must ensure that property rights are defended, codes and regulations are not burdensome, permits are easily and expeditiously accessed, and appraisals are at true and fair market value in both new construction and existing housing. Evan Loukadakis, our Government Relations Representative, has demonstrated how our HBA is protecting the industry and community in his article on page 16 of this magazine.
Professional Development
The excellent education programming that HBAGNO has offered for years stands to improve as we develop a mentorship program and increase our involvement in workforce training. We all know that skilled trade workers are in short supply and our group should be at the forefront of encouraging young people to consider a career in construction.
Outreach & Growth
Our association is only as strong as our membership, and we believe that inclusion and diversification are the keys to strengthening our collective influence. We continue to push the mantra “Do Business with a Member,” and to expand our horizons by reaching out to other businesses to join us in order to build the strength of our associations.
Community Recognition
It is incumbent upon this professional association to educate consumers on best practices when building their new home or renovating an existing one. This publication is a very important resource that we provide to help homeowners, builders, realtors, and others that rely on us for access to the newest industry information. We hope this resource lives up to its intent for all reading it. Remember – Think HBA First: Do Business with a Member!
