WASHINGTON, D.C. (press release) – To celebrate and honor American military, veterans, and first responders, Washington Mardi Gras King Rico Alvendia hosted a USO Concert headlined by country music star Jake Owen.
“It was an honor to host this concert as a tribute to the brave men and women who serve our nation and our communities. We had some incredible heroes in the audience,” said King Alvendia. “Music and Mardi Gras have a unique way of connecting us and you could feel the unity and patriotism permeating the event.”
The concert brought together an array of talent, including special performances by the esteemed West Point Band, as well as the talented students of Edna Karr High School and LB Landry High School, both in New Orleans.
Jake Owen delivered a show-stopping performance, energizing the crowd with his chart-topping hits.
The event served as another example of King Alvendia’s commitment to giving back and fostering unity through this week’s festivities, which kicked off with a visit to wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Additionally, the 2025 King’s charity for the week of Washington Mardi Gras is the Mars Hero Fund, which benefits Active Duty, Veteran Military or First Responders by covering all expenses associated with riding in the Legion of Mars Parade and other charitable events throughout the year, including a Veterans Day meal at the New Orleans VA hospital.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Alvendia served for 25 years as an officer in the U.S. Army JAG Corps and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service during combat operations in Iraq. In 2012, Alvendia co-founded the Legion of Mars which has helped thousands of military veterans and their families throughout Louisiana during financial hardships and while deployed in service to the country.
