HOUMA, LA (AP) — The renewal of a special property tax in the Terrebonne Parish Veterans Memorial District will be included on the Nov. 21 ballot.
The millage, which was passed in 2010 for 10 years, is for the Regional Military Museum and the Veterans' Memorial Park on Louisiana Highway 311 in Houma.
In November 2010, voters approved the property tax that allowed the district to collect about $3.8 million.
For the owner of a $100,000 home, the half-mill tax costs $1.25 annually.
The Courier’s Sean Ellis reports the money that was received was enough to build half of the museum project.
C.J. Christ, chairman of the Regional Military Museum Foundation board, said there has been good community support from the beginning of the project to now despite the initial tax vote coming after the 2008 recession started.
