LEESVILLE, LA (AP) — The Vernon Parish school district has been awarded a $1.5 million federal grant that will be split among five schools over five years.
Superintendent James Williams tells the American Press the grant, awarded by the Department of Defense Education Activity, will be used to provide academic and social support to students in grades 3-8 at South Polk Elementary, Vernon Middle, Leesville Junior High, Pickering Elementary and Pickering High.
Williams said Tuesday the grant focuses on schools with high percentages of military students, and it will be used in part to give students access to certified counselors to aid in their transition from one school to another.
The grant will also allow the schools to provide math tutors to military students.
