NEW ORLEANS – This Thanksgiving, those sitting around the table may be tempted to glance at their phone for news updates or to text a friend. In fact, according to Verizon, 40 percent of people admit to using their phones at a dinner table or in the middle of a conversation.
“Technology has allowed us to be closely connected to anything around the world,” said Verizon Mid-City Store Manager Whitney Nero. “However, oftentimes being connected through technology disconnects us from our family and friends. Fortunately, there are ways to utilize technology while also staying connected with those around us.”
As many consider their families today to be close, or closer, thanks to the Internet and cell phones, 80 percent of people are offended when others use their device during an interaction.
During the holiday season, you can stay connected while still staying in the present. Verizon offers several apps available for use on any device to boost wireless etiquette, ensuring families across the country are screen-free at the table.
“As technology has evolved, our technology etiquette has remained the same,” Nero said. “Thanks to today’s technology, Verizon customers can focus on their friends and family during the holiday season without having to completely power down.
Nero said the top apps to download include:
• Autosilent – Automatically mutes your device at selected locations or times
• Live2txt – Blocks incoming texts and calls
• Manner Mode – Controls your phone ring and/or vibration settings
• Off Mode – Temporarily blocks incoming calls and disables your phone while in meetings
• Silent Time – Automatically silences your phone based on your weekly schedule
• Silence Premium – Silences your phone based on calendar entries
