NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans International Alumni Association announced the selection of Roy A. Glapion P.E. (BS Civil Engineering 1987) as the recipient of the 2015 University of New Orleans Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Award.
In conjunction with the 2015 University of New Orleans Alumni Week (November 2-7), the Alumni Association will host a cocktail Celebration at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport Atrium Thursday, November 5, 2015, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., to present its highest award to Glapion, and to honor past award recipients including Sheriff Newell Normand, Al Jazeera Producer Kim Bondy, Gambit Communications Chairman Clancy Dubos and former Lieutenant Governor Melinda Schwegmann.
In addition, the Distinguished Alumni from each of the University’s colleges will be recognized at the Celebration – a unique reunion of UNO alumni and supporters to raise funds to continue the critical work of UNO alumni engagement and student scholarship support.
Glapion is currently Vice President of The Beta Group, an engineering and construction firm that specializes in materials testing. Previously, he served as co-founder and president of Citywide Testing and Inspections, Inc. During his tenure at Citywide Testing, he employed more than 100 people across New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana. Under his leadership, crucial services were provided to numerous prestigious economic development and public infrastructure projects that have profoundly impacted the business and government sectors across the Metro New Orleans Area.
In addition to his businesses development successes, Glapion serves the community as Chairman of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission. He is a member of the Boards of Directors of the UNO Research & Technology Foundation, the Delgado Foundation, the New Orleans Regional Black Chamber of Commerce, and the UNCF-LA Leadership Council, among others. He is a Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Laureate, a recipient of the Young Leadership Council’s Role Model Award and the UNO Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Service Award.
The 2015 University of New Orleans Distinguished Alumni Celebration will salute UNO’s accomplished alumni and recognize the extraordinary educational, professional and economic contributions made by more than 75,000 UNO graduates in the region and throughout the world.
