UnitedHealthcare, New Orleans Saints Team Up For Special Olympics Bowling Night

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Saints players and UnitedHealthcare executives met Monday, June 5, at Mid-City Lanes Rock ‘n’ Bowl, 3016 S. Carrollton Ave., from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., to help demonstrate the importance of physical activity and good sportsmanship to Special Olympics Louisiana (SOLA) athletes.

The Saints/Special Olympics Bowling Night, sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, was developed with the NFL PLAY 60 message in mind, which encourages kids to get active for at least 60 minutes a day, helps them increase their physical activity and fight childhood obesity. While Special Olympics Louisiana offers a variety of sports in which athletes can participate, bowling was selected because it offers an opportunity for the SOLA athletes to develop hand/eye coordination, as well as important social interaction skills – many of the same skills football players need to work as a team and succeed. The bowling experience provided a fun way for SOLA athletes (children and adults with varying intellectual disabilities) to get active and healthy, event organizers said.

In addition to demonstrating bowling skills, Saints players #94 Cameron Jordan, #16 Brandon Coleman, #84 Michael Hoomanawanui, #82 Coby Fleener and #55 Darryl Tapp demonstrated the fundamentals of good sportsmanship during the spirited rounds of bowling. Joining the players and the Special Olympics athletes was Dr. Health E. Hound, UnitedHealthcare’s mascot. The evening ended with prizes being awarded to the top three bowlers and goodie bags for all attendees.

Currently, nearly 15,000 people with intellectual disabilities in Louisiana participate in more than 100 Special Olympics competitions, including bowling. Although bowling is not an Olympic sport, it is one of the most popular sports in Special Olympics Louisiana, reps said. It is particularly beneficial to people with intellectual disabilities, regardless of age or sports abilities, since it ensures physical exercise, develops hand/ eye coordination and social integration, they said. By providing this fitness experience, UnitedHealthcare and the New Orleans Saints are helping to ensure that everyone gets the guidance they need to get and stay fit, event reps said.
