GRETNA, LA (AP) — An Uber spokesman says a proposed Jefferson Parish law to regulate the ride-booking industry would put the company out of business there.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Littice Bacon-Blood reports Uber spokesman Bill Gibbons said Thursday that his company would not be able to continue to provide "flexible work opportunities and safe, reliable transportation" in the community if the latest proposed ordinance is approved.
The "transportation network services" law includes background checks for drivers and a $200,000 annual operating permit fee, and would allow Uber and similar companies to operate within unincorporated Jefferson Parish. It would not cover ride-booking at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner.
The parish council is scheduled to vote on the proposal later this month, after deferring its decision Wednesday.
