U.S. Sen. Kennedy Touts $137 Million for Louisiana

BATON ROUGE – U.S. Sen. John Kennedy is touting about $137 million in federal dollars on their way to Louisiana, most of which is meant to aid in the COVID-19 pandemic response.

The biggest allocation, almost $67.6 million from the federal department of Health and Human Services, is meant to support Louisiana child care providers in communities affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“A lot of Louisiana’s essential workers depend on child care so that they can focus on helping our community through this pandemic,” Kennedy said. “This HHS funding will give child care providers critical support so that we can all keep helping each other.”

The grant comes as part of $3.5 billion in Child Care and Development Block Grant funding to states under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. These funds are not loans and do not need to be repaid.

Kennedy also pointed to a $55.7 million FEMA grant, made available under the federal Stafford Act, that he says will help reimburse the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for its work responding to Louisiana’s coronavirus outbreak.

An additional grant of almost $14 million is meant to pay for equipment and repair work tied to the 2016 floods. About $7.5 million will help fund repairs at First Baptist Church in Denham Springs, while $4.9 million will help pay for equipment, items and repairs made to the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel and almost $1.4 million will help fund repairs to Galvez Middle School in Ascension Parish, Kennedy said.
