Twitter, Slack’s Miley To Headline NOEW Summit On Inclusive City Growth

NEW ORLEANS – Leslie Miley, former engineering manager at Twitter and current director of engineering at Slack, will headline “City as a Startup,” a national summit exploring the power of a city’s entrepreneurial community to fuel urban development and its role in developing diverse talent to thrive locally in an advancing global tech economy.

The event will take place on Monday, March 20, at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and culminating with Miley’s keynote, beginning at 12:00 p.m. It will be comprised of four individual sessions.

A Silicon Valley veteran and outspoken advocate of diversifying what he considers the white male-dominated world of entrepreneurship, Miley will discuss his leadership role in Venture for America’s newly-founded Entrepreneur-in-Residence program, which aims to place seasoned executives from Silicon Valley on the ground in emerging markets like New Orleans to work with entrepreneurship communities.

“We have to engage with people and organizations that are firmly outside our respective bubbles,” Miley said. “It’s painfully obvious that talent is being systematically drained from most of America’s hardest hit cities.”

His session will focus on how he and Venture for America plan to address the gap and work with entrepreneurial hubs in cities to build a diverse talent pool.

In addition to Miley’s address, “City as a Startup” will feature panels discussing growing industries like food and technology, as well as opportunities and challenges in city housing and government. Speakers will include award-winning executive chef Alon Shaya, Lamar M. Gardere, chief information officer for the City of New Orleans and Adreanecia Morris, executive director at HousingNOLA.
