Thibodaux Council To Consider Sales Tax Increase

THIBODAUX, LA (AP) — Thibodaux voters could see a sales tax increase and another tax proposal on the ballot next spring.

As proposed, the ballot will put forward a half-cent sales tax increase for city services and a renewal of Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department's 5-mill property tax.

The Daily Comet’s Meredith Burns reports the Thibodaux City Council will vote on a resolution Tuesday to hold a special election on March 5, 2016.

The sales tax is expected to raise about $2.4 million for the city services including, but not limited to, constructing, acquiring, improving, extending, maintaining or operating public roads, public safety, parks and recreational facilities.

Mayor Tommy Eschete said if the tax is approved by voters, where the money will be spent will be decided during the budgeting process.
