NEW ORLEANS — The University of New Orleans announced an instant admit program for graduates of St. Charles Parish Public Schools. Students who graduate from a St. Charles Parish Public High School and meet straightforward grade point average and ACT requirements are guaranteed admission to the University. President John Nicklow and St. Charles Parish Public Schools Superintendent Felecia Gomez-Walker signed a memorandum of understanding during a ceremony yesterday on the University of New Orleans campus.
Students must meet the following requirements to be admitted:
- Graduated from a St. Charles Parish Public High School with a 2.5 GPA or greater;
- Scored at least a 19 in math and an 18 in English on the ACT;
- Submitted an application for admission (no application fee is required for students in metro New Orleans)
The objective of the program is to reduce barriers that may prevent some students from applying to college and to help local high school students envision themselves as college students and, ultimately, graduates.
“Regardless of whether or not they are first-generation students, many prospective students are intimidated by the college application process,” Nicklow said. “But it does not have to be stressful or complicated. This program makes it clear that qualified students who follow a few simple steps will gain admission to the University of New Orleans. Admitted students are also eligible for a variety of academic scholarships.”
“The St Charles Parish Public School System appreciates the partnership with the University of New Orleans to reduce the admission barriers for students,” Gomez-Walker said. “As we prepare students for life after high school graduation, our hope is that the instant admit program will afford more students the opportunity to attend this high quality four-year university.”
St. Charles Parish Public Schools are an A-rated system that serve more than 9,800 students. Ninety-four percent of students who live in St. Charles Parish attend public schools.
