One person told another person, who told another, who told one more and before the owners knew it, The Queen’s Clean turned into a great job.
After 30 years working in the hairstyling business, Eric Webb retired. But when a good friend became ill and needed some order in his life, Webb founded his business, The Queen’s Clean. It offers high-quality, low-cost housekeeping services. The business now cleans 20 to 30 houses and a business or two each week. The triumvirate of fiercely fastidious queens consists of Eric Webb, Michael Martin and Greg Hecke.
“We do everything from painting to polishing,” says Martin.
Longtime friend and satisfied customer, Julie Wakefield, finds the team to be thorough and efficient. When they finish she says she honestly feels like she’s living in a brand new space.
“I love these gentlemen,” she says. “Not only are they a pleasure to work with, they really listen to your needs and will provide just the exact service you are wanting. The business’ range is small – limited to homes in the Bywater and Marigny – because none of the cleaners has a car. They do travel to some jobs, such as a home on St. Charles Avenue, via public transportation.
Early on, Webb noticed that people didn’t like the overpowering smell of bleach and other strong cleaning products, so his secret is to use a spray infused with mint oil on countertops to lighten the aroma of the deep clean.
“We’ve come to understand this business as if it were a science,” says Martin. “It’s become a habit of the mind as we customize to our clients’ needs.”
Zalia BeVille, manager of the AllWays Lounge, says that she feels the company really cares about her and her space.
“They are super easy to work with and they call each other “dear,” which I love, and they work together so nicely as a team. I’ve been using them for a couple of years. They do a thoughtful job of cleaning my cabaret. They are old and close friends, as well as actors and drag performers in my world.”
The Queen’s Clean is the side hustle for two wildly creative and mega talented performers.
Martin is a well-known actor, writer, producer, director and founder of Clove Productions who is currently starring as Faustus in playwright Mickle Maher’s retelling of the legend “An Apology for the Course and Outcome of Certain Events Delivered by Doctor John Faustus on This His Final Evening." And Webb, as Tru Demille, is a popular drag performer appearing regularly at a wide variety of venues.
