Did you have a piggy bank? Mine was large and brown with a big red cork for a nose. Every kid seems fascinated by piggy banks. It’s how we first learn about money. Green bills and silver coins were so precious, we were told, that if we were lucky enough to get some we needed to carefully safeguard them in a comical contraption that was tough to access.
When we were allowed to count our loot, our parents said if we saved enough we could buy something really cool.
Fidelity Bank is ditching the piggy bank and going digital with “Lights, Camera, Save!,” a competition aimed to inspire teens to learn about the importance of saving money and investing in a college education.
The national video contest is in its sixth year, and Fidelity Bank, the only bank in Southeast Louisiana participating, is teaming up with the American Bankers Association to invite local high school students to create an educational video about managing their money.
The contest runs through Friday, November 18, 2016. Fidelity will announce its winner on Wednesday, November 30, and then submit the winning video to the national competition in mid-December. The national winner will be chosen in mid-February 2017.
“We are excited about teaching teens about the importance of saving money and spending it wisely, and this contest will do that in a fun way for them,” Fidelity President and CEO Alton McCree said. “The information they learn in the process will help them develop lifelong lessons for their financial planning.”
Teen entrants, aged 13-18, must be legal residents and live in the United States or District of Columbia. Their original videos can’t be longer than 90 seconds, can’t contain any copyrighted material and have to be in English. Only one video per participant is allowed.
Each video will be judged based on production value, creativity and its message relevant to and supportive of the value of saving, the value of saving and using money wisely, and/ or the value of saving in paying for college.
National winning videos will be posted on YouTube, and Fidelity Bank will post local winners’ videos on its YouTube channel as well as its other social media accounts.
The top three national winners of the video contest will be awarded $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 to fund their savings goal. Fidelity will also award three winners from Louisiana cash prizes of $1,000, $750 and $500.
Founded in 1908, Fidelity Bank is a mutual financial institution chartered by the state of Louisiana with 18 branches throughout Southeast Louisiana in New Orleans, Metairie, River Ridge, Kenner, Slidell, Gretna, Mandeville, Covington, Hammond, Ponchatoula and Baton Rouge.
