NEW ORLEANS – The Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp and the New Orleans Arts and Cultural Committee will award the 2016 Louis Armstrong Jazz Pioneer Award to Deacon John Moore on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at 5668 Bancroft Dr., at 7:00 p.m.
Each year, the summer jazz camp holds a fundraiser for its scholarship program, and as part of the fundraiser, the organization established the Pioneer Award recognizing an individual who has contributed to the musical heritage of New Orleans, more specifically to jazz. The Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp will present the Jazz Pioneer Award to Deacon John during this year’s fundraiser.
Deacon John has endured as one of New Orleans’ most talented and adaptive performers with a career spanning more than fifty years, and his contribution is being recognized by the jazz camp. In addition to receiving the award, Deacon John and the Ivories will perform.
The Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp is a jazz education program developing the next generation of Jazz artists and preserving the great American art form. The mission of the camp is to honor jazz in the place of its birth and to foster a greater appreciation of this art form.
This year’s camp, which takes place on the campus of Loyola University, runs from June 27 – July 15.
