BATON ROUGE (AP) — Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is urging Louisiana taxpayers to file for insurance rebates available to anyone who pays for homeowners, renters or business property insurance.
Millions of dollars in rebates tied to the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp. assessment go unclaimed each year.
The assessment involves payments on the nearly $1 billion Citizens borrowed to pay claims related to hurricanes Katrina and Rita that are passed onto property insurance bills. Consumers can claim a refund of the Citizens fee they pay.
But taxpayers have a limited time to file for their rebates.
More than $300 million from 2006 through 2010 has expired and gone unclaimed. But rebates for assessments paid from 2011 through 2014 can still be claimed.
