NEW ORLEANS – Students from the newly formed Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee will present their findings to the Superintendent and Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) at the May Board meeting tonight, Thursday, May 18, at the Orleans Parish School Board, 3520 General DeGaulle Dr., Suite 1050, at 5:00 p.m.
Students from 14 different schools across the city were selected to participate in the Student Advisory Committee to advise the School Board on its vision for public education in New Orleans.
The 22 members of the committee were chosen to participate from more than 100 applications by a selection committee, which was comprised of OPSB and RSD administrators, teacher leaders and members of the Community and Transparency Task Force.
The students range from eighth to 12th grade. The Student Advisory Committee has been holding meetings since February 2017 and conducted a survey of their fellow classmates to discover their vision for the public school system. Questions focused on school experiences, teaching, learning, access and skills. The committee received more than 750 responses and will be sharing their findings with the Superintendent and School Board Thursday evening.
The public and media are invited to attend.
The OPSB currently oversees 32 schools, including 25 charters, six network schools and one educational program for students in secure care facilities.
