NEW ORLEANS (AP) — President Barack Obama has named Southern University at New Orleans Professor Murty S. Kambhampati and 13 other people and one organization as the newest recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.
The honorees will receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year. In addition, recipients get $10,000 from the National Science Foundation. The mentors and organizations represent the 2012 and 2013 winners.
The recognition announced last week is awarded to recognize the role that mentoring plays in the academic and personal development of students studying science and engineering, particularly those who belong to groups that are underrepresented in these fields.
Kambhampati holds a Ph.D. from Jackson State in Environmental Science and a Ph.D. from Andhra University in India, in Ecology.
