NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans says he is stepping down from the helm so he can return to his homeland of Nigeria.
Victor Ukpolo announced his resignation Tuesday in a statement. He has served as chancellor for 10 years and oversaw the university's difficult struggles to rebuild after devastating flooding during Hurricane Katrina.
The announcement said Ukpolo would step down on June 30.
Ukpolo says he wants to return to Nigeria. He says he arrived in the United States 44 years ago with $200 in his pocket and worked to become the head of a university. Before returning to Nigeria, though, he plans to teach at SUNO.
SUNO is a four-year public liberal arts university and a member of the Southern University System.
