STERLINGTON, LA (AP) — Sterlington voters will be asked to consider a half-cent sales tax in November for the proposed sports complex instead of a 3.5 mill property tax originally proposed.
Mayor Vern Breland tells The News-Star’s Scott Rogers the town decided to make the change after several residents voiced concern over the property tax.
The proposal property tax increase would have generated $3.9 million for the sports complex that would include five baseball fields and five softball fields. Based upon current sales tax projections, Breland says the half-cent sales tax would generate approximately $150,000 annually, but Sterlington anticipates more growth so that number should increase over the next five years.
He says the fields are big enough to host high school tournaments, which would be an economic driver for the town.
