NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement on the 2016 Special Legislative Session.
“I am glad the House and Senate came together to stave off dramatic cuts to vital services, but it is clear there is much more work to do.
“Governor John Bel Edwards outlined a balanced, thoughtful plan of cuts, reforms and revenue — but partisan politics from the same folks who spent years rubber-stamping Bobby Jindal’s disastrous budgets derailed a more balanced and sustainable solution.
“Despite the temporary patch, there are still harmful cuts to funding for our criminal justice system; the new University Medical Center; our public schools, UNO, SUNO and Delgado; and investments in tourism and economic development that are helping drive our city’s revenue growth.
“I expect that the hardworking people of New Orleans and the rest of our state will pressure their legislators to fully fund our schools and hospitals and to spread more of the sacrifice to the special interests instead of the middle class.
“We will spend the next few days trying to further analyze what was passed. I will take every opportunity I have in the regular session to fight for and protect the progress we're making in New Orleans.”
