BATON ROUGE (AP) — Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to extend its deadline for Louisiana homeowners impacted by the recent Red River flooding.
FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program requires homeowners to file a Proof of Loss form to claim damages within 60 days of a flood.
Donelon says following Hurricane Isaac in 2012 his department heard from many homeowners who needed more time to collect vital information after floodwaters destroyed their homes.
He said in news release Thursday FEMA authorized four extensions to its initial 60-day filing deadline, increasing policyholders' time to file to 240 days from the time of their loss.
Donelon said he was seeking a similar extension for the homeowners in northwestern and central Louisiana.
