COVINGTON, LA (AP) — The St. Tammany Parish government has received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help improve water quality in the Abita River watershed.

The EPA says the parish government, in partnership with the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, will inspect individual sewage treatment systems and use this data and figures from other sources to determine the best course of action to restore water quality in areas where it is currently deficient.
The parish government has improved wastewater treatment in recent years by consolidating services into regional wastewater treatment plants. The EPA says that in areas where these systems aren't possible, the parish will use the grant money to find other solutions for wastewater treatment.
