BILOXI, MS (AP) — The annual powerboat races will not return to the Mississippi Sound in 2015.
Smokin' The Sound offshore powerboat race in Biloxi and the Smokin' The Lake drag boat races in Gulfport are cancelled for this year
Executive director Woody Bailey says dwindling financial support and recent years' economic downturn prompted the decision.
Bailey says financial support from state and local government, local businesses and tourism groups has mostly dried up.
Smokin the Sound started in 2004. By 2010, it was named a top 20 spring event in the Southeast.
