HOUMA, LA (AP) — If Terrebonne Parish voters approve a half-cent sales tax to increase school employee pay, School Superintendent Philip Martin said says the parish sales tax will rise to 9.5 percent and the workers' pay cannot be reduced.
Martin tells The Courier’s Jacob Batte the starting teacher salary would increase to just under $42,000 if the measure is approved Dec. 6.
The half-cent tax would bring in an estimated $12 million a year to increase full-time school workers' salaries and can only be used for another purpose with approval by voters.
All employees with a teaching certificate will receive a $4,000 raise. Support staff, including secretaries, bus drivers, janitors and cafeteria workers, will receive a $2,000 raise.
