Sheriff's Office: Plaquemine Mayor Mark Gulotta Dies

PLAQUEMINE, LA (AP) — The Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office says Plaquemine Mayor Mark A. "Tony" Gulotta has died of an apparent heart attack.

         NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Renita D. Young reports the 57-year-old was found Friday. Maj. Ronnie Hebert says Gulotta was at a friend's home when he collapsed about 10 a.m. He was later transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

         Hebert says the cause of death has not been confirmed, but officials believe it was a heart attack. Hebert says Gulotta has a history of heart disease. Foul play is not suspected.

         Gulotta was elected mayor in 1992 and is currently serving his sixth term in the position.

         City laws require the city to hold a special election within six months. Until then, Mayor Pro Tem Oscar Mellion would oversee mayoral duties.
