School Board Oks $15 Minimum Wage For Food Service Workers

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana school board has approved a $15 minimum wage for its food service workers.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the Orleans Parish School Board voted last week to ensure a minimum wage of $15 per hour for food service workers for the 2019 fiscal year. The raise affects 66 workers serving 14 schools at 15 different campuses.

In June, the school board voted to increase the base salaries of its staff by 5 percent for the 2019 fiscal year. However, a news release from a Latino parent advocacy group says the district's food service workers would still make roughly $11 an hour with that increase.

Ben Kleban, who represents OPSB District 5, says he hopes the next budget will provide a living wage for every person paid by the school board.
