NEW ORLEANS – St. Martin’s Episcopal School announced that Saints Hall of Famer Dulymus Jenod “Deuce” McAllister is joining its athletic department as an athletic consultant. The appointment is effective immediately. The announcement was made by Head of School Merry Sorrells.
Drawing on his eight seasons as a running back with the New Orleans Saints, McAllister will support the existing athletic department at St. Martin’s by working directly with the football program’s coaching staff and student athletes. In this role, McAllister will serve as a guide and mentor for St. Martin’s student athletes; support the interim football coach with strategy and gameday preparation; and assist with a needs assessment for the football program, equipment, and facilities.
“Mentoring the next generation of scholar athletes and helping them take their skill sets to the next level is my way of paying it forward,” said McAllister. “St. Martin’s is an outstanding school and community. I’m looking forward to working hand-in-hand with the athletic department as we build on its strong foundation and develop champions on and off the field.”
Considered a fan favorite, McAllister was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Two years later, the Mississippi native was inducted into the University of Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Other highlights from McAllister’s illustrious sporting career include serving as a two-time Pro Bowler and playing a vital role in Super Bowl XLIV when the Saints overcame the Colts to take home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in the franchise’s history. In June 2016, McAllister teamed up with legendary “Voice of the Saints” Jim Henderson when he joined WWL’s Saints Radio Network as a color analyst.
“St. Martin’s is dedicated to providing our students with enriching educational and extracurricular activities, as both are critical to the development of well-rounded students,” said Sorrells. “We're beyond excited to have someone of Deuce’s caliber join our athletic department. We are confident that his experiences both on and off the field will benefit our scholar athletes.”
Under the leadership of Athletic Director Sue Bower, St. Martin’s athletic department offers 20 LHSAA-sanctioned teams for student athletes. The school’s Metairie campus features top-notch athletic facilities including the full-length football field, Tony Porter Field, which is surrounded by the quarter-mile Latter & Blum Track. Other facilities include a wellness center, Olympic-sized indoor Thanksgiving Pool, and two gymnasiums.
McAllister’s appointment comes at a time of transition for the school’s athletic department, as current head football coach Scott Simpson will be departing at the end of the 2016 – 2017 school year. St. Martin’s has appointed current defensive coordinator Michael Huwe to serve as interim coach while the school searches for a permanent replacement.
