Royal Sonesta New Orleans Announces 46th Annual ‘Greasing Of The Poles’

NEW ORLEANS – The Royal Sonesta New Orleans announced their 46th annual ‘Greasing of the Poles’ will take place on Friday, February 5, 2016, at 300 Bourbon St. at 10:00 a.m.

Royal Sonesta New Orleans originated this carnival ritual of greasing the building’s support poles as a practical means to deter over-zealous revelers from shimmying up to the coveted balcony space above. Nearly five decades later, the practice has evolved into a star-studded and music-filled event, spawning its own international fan club that hails from Switzerland to participate each year, plus a who’s who of carnival royalty.

This year’s theme, “Let Them Eat King Cake” is inspired by the era of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI. Actor and New Orleans native Bryan Batt will emcee the event.
