Robert Durst To Be Moved To Jail Closer To New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The real estate heir being held in Louisiana while awaiting extradition to California on murder charges is moving to a jail closer to New Orleans.

U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan signed an order Monday to move Robert Durst from a prison 70 miles away from the city to a jail in St. Charles Parish, about 25 miles away.

         Durst's attorneys requested the move.

Durst is being held in Louisiana on a federal charge of possessing a firearm after a felony conviction. The charge is keeping Durst in Louisiana even though he waived extradition to California, where he's charged with murder in the death of Susan Berman.

He's been in the prison housing the psychiatric unit for New Orleans jail because the sheriff's office considered him at risk of suicide.
