NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Residents are weighing in on plans for a $216 million power plant Entergy wants to build in New Orleans east.
The Advocate’s Jessica Williams reports that most of the residents at a Monday night city council meeting on the plant's future were opposed to it although it had some supporters.
Anthony Tran, a parishioner at a church not far from the site, said during the meeting the money would be better spent improving energy efficiency programs.
Opponents question whether the energy the plant would produce is really needed and whether industry groundwater use is contributing to subsidence.
Entergy says the new plant is necessary to replace one taken offline in June and that this plant will use less groundwater.
The council is expected to vote on the issue in April.
