NEW ORLEANS — The NOLA Coalition reports that New Orleans Police Department recruiting and retention continues to improve. Efforts to date in 2023 have yielded 70 recruits. 61 officers have retired, setting up the department for a break-even year. That’s a step in the right direction compared to 2022, when the department lost more than 120 officers.
The coalition was launched in June of 2022 to raise funds and public support for public safety and youth services. The group now includes more than 525 nonprofit and business members.
NOLA Coalition member Michael Hecht, of Greater New Orleans Inc., said the group has raised more than a third of its $15 million fundraising goal and has issued grants to 30 Orleans Parish youth services providers.
