NEW ORLEANS – The voting membership of Folk Alliance International selected Preservation Hall to receive its Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the historic venue’s invaluable cultural work and legacy.
The LAA, the Alliance’s highest honor, was presented at the International Folk Music Awards during the opening night of the 32nd annual Folk Alliance International Conference in New Orleans. Past recipients in this category include Smithsonian Folkways, Sing Out! Magazine and The Newport Festival.
“Preservation Hall and our collective of musicians could not be more grateful to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from Folk Alliance International,” said Preservation Hall Creative Director Ben Jaffe. “We are very proud of what my parents Sandra and Allan Jaffe created 59 years ago and what generations of musicians, from ‘Sweet’ Emma Barrett to Charlie Gabriel, have upheld as a unique and sacred place for New Orleans music and culture. Our sincere appreciation goes to the alliance for this honor and our love goes out to every musician, staff member and visitor that have shared their passion for Preservation Hall.”
Additional award winners announced this evening include BeauSoleil (Living Artist Lifetime Achievement Award), Mahalia Jackson (Legacy Artist) and Ani DiFranco (People’s Voice).
