NEW ORLEANS (AP) — "New Orleans' Sweet Emma Barrett and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band," a 1964 recording made by singer-pianist Sweet Emma Barrett and charter members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, is among the 25 sound recordings selected for induction into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
The New Orleans Advocate’s John Wirt reports Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced the additions to the registry Wednesday.
The album was recorded in-concert in Minneapolis by Barrett, the Humphrey Brothers (clarinetist Willie and trumpeter Percy), trombonist "Big Jim" Robinson, bassist Alcide "Slow Drag" Pavageau, banjoist Emanuel Sayles and drummer Josie "Cie" Frazier.
Other recordings inducted include Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Black Snake Moan"/"Match Box Blues" (1928) and debut albums by The Doors (1967) and Lauryn Hill (1998).
