Power Failure Fixed, Classes Resume At UNO

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Classes at the University of New Orleans resumed Friday, a day after they were canceled because the main power plant lost power and air conditioning was out in most campus buildings.

The campus is on the lakefront, where the National Weather Service reported a temperature of 86 degrees before 10:00 a.m. Thursday, and the heat index was already at 98 degrees.

Meteorologist Alek Krautmann says a high of 93 was forecast at the lakefront, where the city's highest humidity makes the area likely to have a heat index at the high end of New Orleans' expected 100-to-105-degree range.

University spokesman Adam Norris says electricians found burned feeder wires leading to the electric plant, but don't know why they burned. He says the repairs were completed by Thursday afternoon.
