The Parkway Partners board selected LSU Professor of Landscape Architecture Dr. Lake Douglas to receive its 2018 Green Spirit Award for his active involvement in grassroots efforts to enhance and increase public open space in New Orleans, most especially working with the Friends of the Lafitte Greenway and NOLA Parks for All.

Past recipients of the Green Spirit Award include Margaret Orr, former New Orleans City Councilmember Jackie Clarkson, Michael Karam, Jared Zeller and Dr. Bob Thomas. Parkway Partners Founder Flo Schornstein was the original Award winner.

"A grassroots advocate and leader, Dr Douglas has worked tirelessly to enhance and increase public open space in New Orleans. His particular impact on urban growth and greenspace preservation and enhancement with the Friends of Lafitte Greenway and NOLA Parks for All has raised the bar for all of us who are passionate about the urban landscape of New Orleans,” said Parkway Partners Board President Norma Grace.

The University of New Orleans: An Investment With Lasting Returns

Higher education is changing, but one thing that remains constant is the University of New Orleans’ devotion to powering the engine propelling Louisiana’s workforce. For...

Lake Douglas, PhD, ASLA, is professor of landscape architecture and associate dean of research and development at the LSU College of Art & Design. He received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from LSU, a Master in Landscape Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a PhD in Urban Studies/Urban History from the University of New Orleans. His dissertation investigated 19th-century horticultural commerce in New Orleans as an agency of community cohesion, and his current research involves documenting cultural landscapes of the Gulf South through investigations of public spaces, domestic gardens, people, and written evidence.

Lake supports greenspace in New Orleans by enhancing the community through cultural development, using research skills to inform design strategies, and developing communication skills in design through effective writing.

The Feast is the organization’s annual fundraising event held every October. With the support of local businesses, corporations and friends of Parkway Partners, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised to support tree planting and greenspace education in New Orleans.

“Parkway Partners works closely with the city, but we receive no funding from its budget,” said Founder Flo Schornstein. “Just as we rely on volunteers like Lake Douglas to support our work, we depend on our annual Feast to help finance our efforts.”

For more than 25 years, Feast has attracted hundreds of fans who enjoy live music while dining on outstanding cuisine and specialty drinks. This year, grab your fedora and shine your salsa dancing shoes and join us for “Babalu Brunch – Feast Havana Style.” A Mojito Bar and delicious menu will be provided by Pigéon Catering. Guests will be entertained by a live Latin Band, a silent auction experience and the popular Plinko game is back by popular demand!
