NEW ORLEANS — Today, April 3, the neighborhood of Parkview will leave the Neighborhood Conservation District Advisory Committee (NCDAC) and become a member of the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC). The NCDAC reviews demolition applications within the district and provides recommendations to the City Council. By becoming a local historic district, demolition requests in Parkview will only have to be heard by the HDLC, streamlining the process for demolition.
“New Orleans is excited to add another neighborhood to the Historic District Landmarks Commission,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “Streamlining and simplifying government, while preserving New Orleans historical architecture will help our residents and ensure our City’s long term cultural heritage.”
District A Councilmember Susan Guidry said, ”I am pleased that we created the Parkview Local Historic District. The historic properties in this lovely area, comprised of three neighborhoods, deserve HDLC protection from demolition.”
The Parkview historic district is designated as a “partial control” district, meaning the HDLC will only have jurisdiction over demolitions within those boundaries, city reps said. Recently, the Uptown, Carrollton and Mid-City neighborhoods also joined the HDLC.
HDLC is charged with safeguarding the heritage of the City of New Orleans through the preservation, protection and regulation of buildings, sites, monuments, structures and areas of historic interest or importance within the city.
