MONROE, LA (AP) — Several southern Ouachita Parish residents are up in arms over the construction of a shooting range in their community.
Residents along Moore Road want the Ouachita Parish Police Jury to muzzle the operation. Late last week parish officials were notified the owners of the property had started construction without proper building permits. Code enforcement stopped worked and issued citations for construction without proper permits.
The News-Star’s Scott Rogers reports work is expected to resume once all requirements are met to proceed.
Rev. James Johnson and members of his neighborhood say the biggest concern is the safety of people living near an outdoor shooting range.
Parish attorney Jay Mitchell says the police jury has no authority to confirm or deny the business due to the lack of zoning ordinances in the unincorporated areas.
