VIDALIA, LA (AP) — The director of Feed the Hungry in Vidalia says she and several volunteers at the local organization want to give 200 turkeys to families in need before Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Kay Miller, who was named director of the organization this month, told The Natchez Democrat’s Sarah Cook that delivering turkeys is a new endeavor, and she believes Feed the Hungry will be successful.
"God calls us to minister to the least of these, and that's what we're doing here," she said.
The organization distributes about 180 boxes of canned, dried and frozen food the last Saturday of every month. The food is then given to local residents who meet certain criteria set by the organization including earning below a specific income.
Barry Brister, pastor of the First Assembly of God church next door, said Feed the Hungry gets its food supply from the Food Bank of Central Louisiana and the church pays 18 cents per pound of food.
Financial consultant for the organization Susan Chapman said when the food is distributed, the parking lot is always full with several lines. Some of the recipients even come to tears, she said.
Miller also is asking those interested to donate money or food to the First Assembly of God church to help those in need.
"We want to help," she said, "and that's what we're here for."
