LAFAYETTE, LA (AP) — The Lafayette City-Parish Council voted 5-3 against a resolution supporting the development of the old federal courthouse into mixed-use residential units.
After Tuesday night's meeting, Downtown Development Authority CEO Nathan Norris said the council wants more information.
Developing the property of the old federal courthouse is the first phase of the authority's redevelopment plan of Main Street, which — within the downtown limits — stretches from Johnston Street to the St. John Cathedral.
Norris tells The Advertiser’s Katie de la Rosa handing the property over to private developers who will turn the area into high-quality city living is seen as "the catalyst" to enhancing Main Street. He says redeveloping the old courthouse would be "the standard" for future private development investment downtown.
