WASHINGTON (AP) — School is just finishing up in most places, but Office Depot is already looking ahead to hiring 8,000 workers to help handle the back-to-school retail rush next fall.
The office products retailer says the hires will be both seasonal and regular retail associate positions. The Boca Raton, Florida, company said it is hiring 2,000 more seasonal workers this year than it did for back-to-school season in 2015, an increase of 33 percent.
Its shares rose 10 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $3.40 in midday trading Tuesday.
Office Depot Inc. shares have taken a beating in the past year, losing 62 percent of their value. A big chunk of that loss came after the company and rival Staples Inc. dropped their $6.3 billion merger plans in May as antitrust regulators opposed it.
