BATON ROUGE (AP) — Nearly 160,000 Louisiana residents have yet to claim their stimulus checks and the deadline to do so is fast approaching.
The Internal Revenue Service said those who have not yet claimed their stimulus check should get a letter letting them know they are still eligible to receive the money the federal government set aside amid the coronavirus pandemic. The deadline to apply for that check is Oct. 15 in order to receive a payment by the end of the year, news outlets reported.
“The letters are being sent to people who haven’t filed a return for either 2018 or 2019 or already registered with the IRS,” said Michael Devine, IRS spokesman. “These are people who may not have had to file a tax return because they appear to have very low incomes based on Forms W-2 and 1099, and other third-party statements available to the IRS.”
People who earn up to $75,000 in adjusted gross income and have a Social Security number are set to receive a $1,200 payment under the law. Married couples who file joint returns will receive $2,400 if their adjusted gross income is under $150,000. Parents will receive $500 for each qualifying child ages 16 and under.
Visit the IRS’ website and use the “Get My Payment” tool for more information. The tool guides residents through a process where they can submit their Social Security number and personal bank account information and get their payments more quickly. Paper checks may not begin until May.
