CHALMETTE, LA— Nunez Community College has been granted approval by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners to make updates to its practical nursing (LPN) program. The changes will take affect for the fall 2016 incoming class, applications for which are being accepted now through May 1, 2016.
The changes include eliminating pre-requisite courses and changing the length of the program. Previously, a student could earn their technical diploma in practical nursing in 18 months. With the program updates, it is now possible for a student to complete the program in as little as 16 months. Students will no longer have to wait to begin the nursing courses, like anatomy and physiology and nutrition therapy, provided they meet the program’s minimum requirements.
The minimum entrance and placement examination scores will remain the same as in the past. A high school diploma or equivalency is required, and prospective nursing students must be admitted to Nunez Community College.
“These changes to the practical nursing program at Nunez have been designed to help students gain quicker entry into the nursing program and to their nursing careers,” said Michelle Bennett, the College’s Practical Nursing program director. “Our program gets students ready to go out into the field as nurses where they are needed most to provide patient care,” she continued.
Nunez Community College is a comprehensive community college offering 25 academic programs, including specialized training and continuing education courses. Early registration for fall 2016 will be held April 5 – 7 and the College’s next Open House is Wednesday, April 6 at 6:00 p.m.
