Nucor To Resume Operations At St. James Plant

CONVENT, LA (AP) — Charlotte, North Carolina-based Nucor Corp. plans to reopen its steel plant in St. James Parish by the end of the month thanks to improving market conditions.

The move comes just weeks after the company announced it would temporarily close the plant, casting a cloud over its plans to build a larger $3.4 billion complex at the site.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Jennifer Larino reports Nucor said in a news release Wednesday that changes in the cost of raw materials used at the Convent facility prompted the decision to reopen. The plant uses natural gas to produce iron ore pellets, which are blended with scrap metal to make steel.
