Northshore Technical Community College Ranked #1 In USA For Economic Success Of Its Graduates

GREENSBURG, LA – In a recent study by The Brookings Institute, Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC) was identified as one of six two-year colleges to receive a perfect score of 100 for providing “value added” in terms of the earning potential and earning power of its graduates, ranking the college first in the nation this category.

The study entitled “Beyond College Rankings, a value added approach to assessing two and four year schools” used a variety of public and private data sources to identify colleges and universities that provide value added earnings potential for graduates. In particular, the study examined mid-career earnings of the typical graduate, occupational earnings power of the typical graduate, and loan repayment rate of the typical graduate. For each variable, the highest possible score is 100, which indicates that there is a significant and positive difference between what is predicted and what is actually observed. The report found that the expected occupational earning power of the typical NTCC graduate is $62,056, but the actual occupational earning power is $76,849, giving the college a perfect score of 100.

“Our college faculty, staff and administration have embarked on an aggressive workforce training alignment initiative led by key industry stakeholders representing high-demand, high-wage occupations. Through this initiative, efforts continue to ensure graduates are prepared for relevant employment that leads to substantial workforce development opportunities as well as competitive salaries,” said William S. Wainwright, Chancellor of NTCC.

Dennis Raether, a 2012 Drafting and Design Technology graduate, of NTCC, has seen a 30 percent increase in his earnings post-graduation. “There is no question that my time spent learning at NTCC helped prepare me for real world workforce experiences,” said Raether, who works in the engineering department at International Paper in Bogalusa. “To have a job immediately after graduating is a testament to the NTCC program offerings and the faculty teaching the courses. They used their industry experience to teach us practical lessons, which I was able to use from the first day I began my career.”

The study’s findings validates Goal Two of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System’s Our Louisiana 2020: Building the Workforce of Tomorrow public agenda which sets out to double the earnings of a graduating class by 2020.

“We are very proud of students like Dennis and what Northshore has done to help our students not only earn a college credential and enter into the workforce, but also earn wages that give them the ability to provide for their families,” said Monty Sullivan, president of the Louisiana Community & Technical College System. “The actual earnings of the 2014 LCTCS graduating class totaled nearly $724 million in the first year after graduation. Goal two of the Our Louisiana 2020 public agenda, is to double the annual earnings of our graduates to $1.5 billion by the year 2020. We are on track to do just that.”
